Needs and Problems
Severe damage to infrastructure will be one of the biggest challenges for aid agencies trying to bring relief to the survivors of the Indonesian earthquake.
As rescuers and assessment teams start reaching Padang, reports that bridges and roads are destroyed in the surrounding districts poses a big logistical challenge. Several roads are blocked by debris from landslides. The route from Padang to Pariaman is cut off.
The concern is that petrol stations and fuel stations have all been damaged. Within a short time there will be a shortage of fuel, and the sewage and water systems in the city have been destroyed." Mercy Corp Country Director.
The electricity and municipal waterworks (PDAM) also are totally off and make the situation more complicated and difficult to access the scale of the damage. However, the government is trying to repair the electricity operation. Some telecommunications networks are now up and running but the lack of electricity means that many communities cannot charge their batteries.
Indonesian Community in Houston is working together with ISRANA and RED CROSS for the first phase of recovery in the disaster are to get involve in rebuilding in the following projects:
1. Six (6) temporary schools (USD 10K)
2. Two hundreds (200) temporary houses (USD 100K)
3. Forty (40) unit of public lavatory (USD 20K).
Total target fund required for these projects are USD 130K.

Introduction
As reported from US Geological Survey (USGS), the magnitude 7.6 southern Sumatra earthquake of September 30, 2009 occurred as a result of oblique-thrust faulting near the subduction interface plate boundary between the Australian and Sunda plates. At the location of this earthquake, the Australian Plate moves northeast with respect to the Sunda plate at a velocity of approximately 60 mm/yr.
The earthquake has seriously affected many aspects of life in West Sumatra. At least 715 people are dead, 2,400 badly injured and 20,000 homes heavily damaged (UNOCHA figure), with Padang city and Padang Pariaman District being the worst affected. The number of casualties is expected to increase. Ministry of Health fear as many as 3,000 people may still be trapped under rubble and the death toll could reach 5,000.
The number of deaths and loss is found throughout seven districts in West Sumatra: Padang, Pesisir Selatan, Solok, Agam, Pasaman Barat and Pariaman. However, social and economic impact has been felt in all other part of West Sumatra, as many victims of the disaster are now taking refuge to those unaffected districts.
This was a rare and destructive natural calamity. With the increasing number of the injured and death, viewing the people who lost their family member crying with grief, seeing the cities reduced to ruins, we herein announce a donation proposal.
Following information announced by Indonesia Government, the initial programs on emergency phase have been completed. They are now progressing on recovery phase.
