Severe damage to infrastructure will be one of the biggest challenges for aid agencies trying to bring relief to the survivors of the Indonesian earthquake.
As rescuers and assessment teams start reaching Padang, reports that bridges and roads are destroyed in the surrounding districts poses a big logistical challenge. Several roads are blocked by debris from landslides. The route from Padang to Pariaman is cut off.
The concern is that petrol stations and fuel stations have all been damaged. Within a short time there will be a shortage of fuel, and the sewage and water systems in the city have been destroyed." Mercy Corp Country Director.
The electricity and municipal waterworks (PDAM) also are totally off and make the situation more complicated and difficult to access the scale of the damage. However, the government is trying to repair the electricity operation. Some telecommunications networks are now up and running but the lack of electricity means that many communities cannot charge their batteries.
Indonesian Community in Houston is working together with ISRANA and RED CROSS for the first phase of recovery in the disaster are to get involve in rebuilding in the following projects:
1. Six (6) temporary schools (USD 10K)
2. Two hundreds (200) temporary houses (USD 100K)
3. Forty (40) unit of public lavatory (USD 20K).
Total target fund required for these projects are USD 130K.
